Real Exchange Rates and Sectoral Productivity in the Eurozone

چکیده
We investigate the link between real exchange rates and sectoral total factor productivity measures for countries in the Eurozone. Real exchange rate patterns closely accord with an amended Balassa-Samuelson interpretation, both in cross-section and time series. We construct a sticky price dynamic general equilibrium model to generate a crosssection and time series of real exchange rates that can be directly compared to the data. Under the assumption of a common currency, estimates from simulated regressions are very similar to the empirical estimates for the Eurozone. Our findings contrast with previous studies that have found little relationship between productivity levels and the real exchange rate among high-income countries, but those studies have included country pairs which have a floating nominal exchange rate. The purpose of this paper is to study the main determinants of the bilateral real exchange rates for major oil exporting countries vis-à-vis the US dollar. Taking into account the impact of the real oil prices on real exchange rates, it may be observed that oil prices play a significant part in determining the terms of trade. In addition to the real oil price, two other fundamental factors that...

We examine the relationship between market structure and the persistence of US dollar-based sectoral real exchange rates for 14 OECD countries. Our empirical results based on disaggregated data suggest that differences in market structure significantly determine the rates at which deviations from sectoral purchasing power parity decay. Specifically, industries with a larger price-cost margin ar...
متن کاملReal Exchange Rates and Productivity: Evidence From Asia
This paper examines a productivity-based explanation of the long run real exchange rate movements of six Asian economies. Using industry level data, we construct total factor productivities (TFPs) for the tradable and nontradable sectors. We nd that (a) within each country the relative price of nontradable goods is cointegrated with the sectoral TFP di¤erential, and (b) the real exchange rates...

This paper studies the impact of a natural resource boom on structural change and real exchange rate dynamics, taking into account the indirect effect that operates through relative sectoral productivity changes. The paper's contribution to the Dutch disease literature is threefold. First, I extend the simple learning by doing productivity specification to include trade barriers and technology ...

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of import of technology on Iranian Economy. We have used multi-sectoral and multi–regional computable general equilibrium GTAP model. Transfer of technology from one region to another is another factor effecting productivity. Trade is one of the channels that speeds the transfer of technology. The effect of a ten percent productivity shock, in...
